Green Mobility App

April - June 2024: The National SDG Challenge, Netherlands

While I participated in a sustainability challenge, I worked in a multidisciplinary team to find a solution to Kiwa’s goal: reducing 42% CO2 emissions by 2030. We found that mobility of personnel is their biggest polution cause, so me and my team decided on the following solution: Green Mobility for employees. Kiwa has two types of employees: administrative and auditors. Administrative employees need to go to the office, so we made a plan for a green shuttle, and auditors need to go to client sites, so we made a plan for transitioning to electric vehicles. As a result, I designed an application aiming to ease employees’ transition to green mobility, focusing on EV & Shuttle management, as well as work & schedule management.

The steps described in this project are all taken by me, since I was the only UX designer in the team, while my team members focused on the metrics and mathematical results of the solution. The final prototype was designed using Figma.

Desk research

I started my desk research with understanding what type of technologies exist and can be implemented for a green mobility management app. I found that data security is paramount, with features like user authentication, encryption, and version control ensuring sensitive information is protected and properly tracked.
Integration with existing document management systems and collaboration tools will streamline workflows, allowing seamless document sharing and feedback. Offline functionality is crucial for auditors working in areas with limited connectivity, ensuring continuous access to essential tools and data.
AI-driven route planning, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs), will optimize employee routes by identifying charging stations and personalizing travel needs.
Shuttle services can similarly benefit from AI, calculating the most efficient routes based on employee pickup locations. For remote inspections, high-quality video streaming, real-time communication, and comprehensive reporting tools will enable clear documentation and collaboration.
These insights highlight the importance of security, integration, and user-friendly features in building an efficient and sustainable mobility app.

Understanding the user

Then I continued my research with understanding the needs of the auditors. Kiwa auditors perform five key types of work:

1. Testing: Auditors conduct tests to determine characteristics of materials, components, or processes, ensuring they meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Testing can be destructive or non-destructive and is done in labs or on-site. Auditors also collaborate in research and product development, providing accurate reports on results for continuous improvement.

2. Inspection: Auditors inspect a wide range of items, from materials to entire systems like factories or fuel stations. They assess conformity to regulations and standards through on-site or remote inspections, using technologies like drones or sensors, and provide detailed reports on their findings.

3. Certification: Kiwa auditors certify products, systems, and processes according to established guidelines, often based on ISO standards. Auditors perform initial audits, issue certifications, and conduct regular follow-up checks to ensure ongoing compliance, maintaining trust and reliability.

4. Training: Auditors help deliver training to clients on essential industry standards and skills. These courses, ranging from workshops to extended programs, equip professionals with the knowledge needed to ensure regulatory compliance and improve organizational practices.

5. Consultancy: Kiwa auditors provide independent consultancy services, advising organizations on risk management, system analysis, and decision-making. Their expertise helps clients minimize operational risks and make informed, effective decisions for future growth.

These services ensure that Kiwa auditors contribute to safety, quality, compliance, and efficiency across a wide range of industries.

Survey

A survey was prepared and sent out in order to research employees’ work journeys and job experiences. The aim of the survey was to create a plan most suitable to reduce the CO2 emissions of the company and improve employee satisfaction. 291 employees were surveyed to obtain information such as their working location preferences, willingness to use EV cars/shuttles for commuting, average commuting distance, factors that influence their commuting choices, etc.

Results of the survey show that there are more employees willing and neutral to try the green mobility transition, than those who said no. I learned about their pain points for using the shuttle, and what would make their experience better.

Client feedback

I received positive feedback for the wireframes and that they are useful for employees. I conduceted an interview with an employee from Kiwa to understand if this application would help them transition to green mobility and make their work life easier. From the interview I understood that the wireframes are good, but there are already applications that they use during the Audits and to store files.

As a result, I decided to focus the application on Mobility and Work management, to make the transition as easy as possible for the employees.

High-fidelity prototype

The final result is an application focused on the employee's transition to green mobility. Focusing on EV, Shuttle, Work and Mental health management, the application would ensure that the employees are taken care of in a time when they need to adapt to change. Additionally, allowing employees to be in charge of the EV and Shuttle services makes them feel empowered and valued in the company, gives them freedom and ensures better work quality.

Solution poster

We presented our solution for Green Mobility transition app at the SDG Challenge Showcase Fair, where Kiwa, our client, and us were deeply proud and happy with our results.
